Designing for Life: A Collaboration with Jan Null on Public Safety Website Revamp
Not all design projects are created equal. Some carry immense weight and importance, transcending aesthetics and delving into the realm of life-saving information. When Jan Null, a distinguished meteorologist and adjunct professor at San Jose State, approached me to overhaul his public safety website, I was deeply honored by the trust he placed in my abilities.
Jan's mission was clear: to educate the public on the alarming number of infant deaths occurring in hot cars each year. With his mantra echoing in my mind—"Every car heat stroke death is preventable"—I knew this project held profound significance.
The original website Jan had pieced together was functional but outdated, lacking mobile compatibility and featuring static graphics that hindered accessibility. Our challenge was clear: to transform this crucial information into a user-friendly platform that could reach a wider audience.
Together, Jan and I embarked on a journey to revitalize his website. We focused on clarity and conciseness, ensuring every piece of information was easily digestible. One of the key transformations was converting flat graphics into live text, enhancing searchability and making the content more accessible to all.
The result? A sleek, modern website that serves as a beacon of public safety awareness. Through our collaboration, we crafted an intuitive interface that guides visitors through essential precautions and measures to prevent tragic incidents.
